John Chapman

Since gaining a post-graduate diploma in Recreation Management, John has had 25 years experience in sports and recreation including commercial leisure facility management, research, project management in local government and consultancy.

In the late 1980s John cut his teeth in sports and leisure research with the Pickering Torkildsen Partnership (PTP), following four years in operational management for North Bedfordshire Borough Council and Holiday Club International / Bass Leisure. While with PTP, John carried out research for many sports and leisure consultancy assignments including a Commonwealth Games Bid for Cardiff and researched material for the 3rd edition of ‘Recreation Management’ by the late George Torkildsen, which remains a text for students in the field.

Subsequently John was Sports Projects & Policy Manager for the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham where he was responsible for sports and play strategy and facility development. He then returned to consultancy first with Sportspartner (a consultancy owned by the former Sports Council Trust), then with Strategic Leisure where he managed the company's Southern England office. In 2001, he joined Leisure Futures.

At Leisure Futures, John has project managed the procurement of sports management services and sports centres on behalf of three London Borough Councils, led successful funding applications and provided specialist sports and recreation advice in research, planning, funding and management to clients as diverse as The Royal Parks Agency, Sport England South West, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, Camden Council, The Active Communities Network, a commercial leisure company, a community sports trust, County Sports Partnerships, the Borough of Oswestry and The Amateur Rowing Association.

John has led Leisure Futures' work on London 2012, on major strategy development projects for The Royal Parks and ProActive West London and on the preparation of the guidance toolkit for sport and arts on education sites - 'The Win Win Scenario' and for Sport England's 'Facility Improvement Service.'

Working with former colleagues and associates, John has also contributed to national and area evaluations of sports intervention programmes including ‘Positive Futures’, ‘Active Communities’, area Youth Games, StreetGames and the Sport England Lottery Fund capital projects grant programme. John has also managed Leisure Futures' evaluation work on the Big Lottery Regional People's Millions programme.

In a voluntary capacity, John is a qualified dinghy sailing instructor and teaches at a local RYA Onboard Centre. He is a RFU Level 1 coach and holds a CRB Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.
